Root Canal Treatment

Every tooth is only as good as its root. With a root canal treatment, even severely damaged teeth can be preserved. We work with innovative technologies - comfortable, safe, and painless.

Root Canal Treatment under the Microscope

Root Canal Treatment under the Microscope - high magnification for the tiniest structures

We save almost every tooth with a root canal treatment.

Every tooth is only as good as its root. Dr. Leonie Andermatt, a dentist in our dental practice in Zug, is your specialized contact person for root canal treatments. Whether it's root canal therapy, apical surgery, or revision (renewal of an existing root filling) - with a root canal treatment, even severely damaged teeth can usually be preserved. For this purpose, we work with innovative technologies; comfortable, safe, and generally painless. In cases of complex root anatomy, we use a highly magnifying surgical microscope and three-dimensional X-rays (CBCT) for optimal visualization and analysis of the root canals.

The tooth root in the jawbone is the foundation of a tooth. It supports the tooth and supplies it with nutrients. The tooth root is connected to the jaw through tiny canals. Nerves and blood vessels run through these extremely thin channels, often as thin as a hair. When a tooth is severely damaged, its root becomes diseased. Now, immediate action is required. The tooth root needs to be treated. If an infected tooth root is left untreated, the infection spreads to the surrounding tissue. The consequences are severe pain, accumulation of pus, swelling, abscess, and tooth loss.

There are many reasons
that support the need for a root canal treatment:

  • Pain relief –

    the pain can subside

  • Tooth preservation –

the tooth can be preserved for a longer period of time

  • Removal of infection –

the source of inflammation is removed from the body

  • Tooth restoration –

the treated tooth is naturally restored and built up

A root canal treatment may initially be time-consuming, but you will be rewarded with the preservation of your natural tooth.

The diseased tooth root can have various causes.

One cause of an infected tooth root can be deep decay. The decay-causing bacteria have penetrated into the tooth root, causing inflammation. In some cases, root inflammation can develop beneath an existing filling or dental crown, for example, if the margin is leaking or if the tooth has a crack. The decay-causing bacteria migrate under the filling or crown and gradually penetrate to the root. Additionally, a dental injury and/or trauma can damage the tooth root, and prompt help in such cases also promotes tooth preservation.

Treatment of the tooth root with a microscope.

During the root canal treatment, we remove the infected tissue from the tooth and the surrounding area. Generally, the root canal treatment is performed in our dental practice using a specialized microscope or with the use of magnifying glasses. This allows us to thoroughly clean the interior ort h tooth and remove the infection whenever possible. With the microscope, we can precisely locate and visualize the extremely fine root canals. This ensures the detection of hidden root canals, which is crucial for successful therapy. We use an ultrasonic device to clean the interior ort h tooth (reciprocating preparation), flush the root canals with a disinfecting solution, and provide them with a medicated filling. The definitive root filling is then performed at a separate appointment. An electrometric length measurement, which is a precise method for determining the length ort h tooth root in real-time, allows for absolute precision and reduces the number of X-ray images necessary ort he root canal treatment.

After the root canal treatment, the tooth is restored.

After the root canal treatment, the tooth is temporarily sealed. Only when it is ensured that the infection has been eliminated, do we proceed with the restoration ft he tooth in ist natural function. Depending on the extent ft he damage, this can be done with a filling or a dental crown. Both procedures are performed in our dental practice. Therefore, you will be supported by us throughout the entire duration ft he root canal treatment.

Microscope-assisted apical surgery as a last resort.

If the infection has deeply penetrated the tooth root and even our specialists face limitations with conventional root canal treatment, there is still the possibility of performing surgical apical surgery. The use of the surgical microscope is a crucial factor for the success of this therapy. The root tip is minimally trimmed by a few millimeters, and the surrounding tissue is cleaned. Subsequently, the entire area is thoroughly disinfected and filled with a specialized filling. An X-ray confirms the dentist's thorough work. Approximately 1-2 weeks later, the tissue is healed.

The root canal treatment is painless.

The name itself makes a root canal treatment sound worse than it actually is. We say:
Root canal treatment is much better than its reputation!
In our dental practice, we place great importance on pain-free treatment. Modern technologies and anesthetics allow the root canal treatment to be performed without experiencing pain or prolonged side effects.

Some of our modern techniques include:

Electrometric length measurement - for precise diagnostics without the need for additional X-rays and real-time navigation in the root canal

Mechanical preparation - advanced sensor-driven advancement of root canal instruments for effective and time-saving treatment

Use of hygienic and fracture-resistant disposable instruments (NiTi) - these instruments are used exclusively for each patient

3D-CBCT analysis of root anatomy in complex cases and software-assisted navigation within the root canals

Ultrasound-activated disinfecting irrigation solutions - modern ultrasound technology for thorough cleaning of the root canal

Surgical microscope - for maximum magnification and illumination of even the finest structures inside the tooth

Use of rubber dam - for a sterile field that prevents bacterial contamination of the tooth
