Here are some common patient questions about dental implants:
Dental implants do not get cavities. However, this doesn’t mean that dental implants don’t require care – quite the opposite. After undergoing implant treatment, enjoy the wonderful feeling of having beautiful and sturdy teeth, ideally for a lifetime. Like natural teeth, implants are closely connected ft he body and exposed to various influences in the oral environment (oral health). Therefore, regular cleaning and prophylaxis, both at home and in the dental practice, are important. In our dental practice in Zug, we offer continuous care for existing restorations. The specialized dentists of TEAM 15 and highly qualified dental hygienists ensure healthy, clean implants during the prophylaxis consultation.
Absolutely! Oral hygiene ft he essential foundation ft he long-term success of implant therapy! Plaque, bacteria, food residues, etc., can cause gum inflammation, which can be a trigger for peri-implantitis, an inflammatory condition ft he tissue (gums and bone) around the implant. For daily oral hygiene, similar tools can be used as for natural teeth: a toothbrush, dental floss, or interdental brushes. After receiving implant therapy, you will receive individual recommendations and instructions from us in this regard. Together with you, we aim ft he long-term maintenance of your new teeth.
Feel free to ask us! In our prophylaxis consultation, we are happy to explain cleaning techniques for your implant-supported restorations. In general, we recommend at least biannual professional monitoring of dental implants. During these appointments, thorough and deep cleaning the implants and implant-supported restorations is carried out.
Scientific studies show that dental implants are highly durable, and in ideal cases, many patients are satisfied with their implant-supported restorations for a lifetime. However, complications can arise in some situations, such as mucositis (inflammation of the gum around the implant, reversible through improved hygiene) or peri-implantitis (inflammation affecting the gum and bone, requiring additional measures in addition to hygiene improvement). Peri-implantitis describes a severe inflammation of the gum (and bone) around the implant. Untreated, the condition can lead to bone loss, and in the worst case, the implant may need to be removed. However, we aim to prevent it from reaching that point. That's what we do in our peri-implantitis consultation. When the condition is treated promptly and effectively, the chances of healing are very good.
Like periodontitis, peri-implantitis is a very insidious condition because it starts slowly and often goes unnoticed by the affected individual. That's why regular professional monitoring is important (including X-ray examination). Our specialists may be able to detect and treat incipient inflammatory changes in a timely manner. An individual may recognize peri-implantitis by initial signs such as inflamed gums or bad breath. At the latest, you should contact us at this point.
The treatment depends on the severity of the condition. The primary focus is on eliminating the bacteria that cause inflammation. In the early stages of the disease, a so-called closed treatment is performed. Disinfectant rinses, professional cleaning of the implant surface, and treatment of the surrounding gum tissue help. Sometimes antibiotics may also be indicated. In advanced stages, an open treatment is usually performed. There are various surgical procedures for eliminating the germs and bacteria. The goal is to stop tissue loss and heal the inflammation. If bone loss has already occurred, the resulting bone pocket can be filled with a bone replacement material. Bone-building measures (bone augmentation) are carried out safely and routinely in our dental practice in Zug. We specialize in peri-implantitis therapy and have extensive experience in this field.
Oral hygiene and dental care! Good oral hygiene at home is crucial to remove dental plaque and thus prevent the accumulation of bacteria and inflammation. In addition to this, we recommend regular visits to our Dental Hygiene & Prevention department. For high-risk patients, a bacteria or genetic test, or a specific marker test (aMMP-8 test) may be useful. This allows us to detect the risk of peri-implantitis at an early stage.
