Pacifier Weaning

Successful Pacifier Weaning –
with our expert tips.

What children find comforting can become a real challenge for teeth: the pacifier.
The good news? We have the right tips for a quick weaning process.

Tips for the whole family!

The Pacifier – healthy or unhealthy?

The pacifier is particularly important in the first few months to provide relaxation and calm periods for the child. It comforts, helps with falling asleep, and provides security.
When it suddenly goes missing, the drama is often immense.
However, what many don't know is that if it's used for too long, the pacifier can lead to dental misalignments and jaw problems. This is because once the teeth come in, many children bite holes in the silicone part of the pacifier. Food and saliva residues can remain, paving the way for tooth decay. We don't let it get that far and provide holistic guidance on pacifier weaning in our practice.

As your experts in 360° dentistry,
we'd like to share some tips for gentle weaning in advance:

  • Pay attention to the right timing

Weaning should coincide with a reduction in the sucking reflex (around the eighth month), but should start no later than the third year of life. However, in general, you determine the right time for your child yourself because every child is different.

  • Approach it empathetically and step by step

Start by allowing pacifier use only in certain situations or specific places. For example, only give the pacifier for sleeping and gradually remove it.

  • Be imaginative

Offer alternatives such as bedtime stories, rely on rituals, and use creative approaches, like the pacifier fairy, to playfully assist with the weaning process. We are happy to recommend a suitable children's book on this topic as well.

  • Stay calm

Pacifier weaning can be very emotional. Take control early on and approach it with calmness and patience. Don't let it turn into a drama and practice a healthy approach to the topic from the beginning.
