Caries Diagnosis

Prevent tooth damage through caries diagnosis.

When detected early, it can be quickly treated. If caries is identified and treated early, significant damage to the teeth can be prevented. We favor modern caries monitoring.

Prevent tooth damage with early detection.

Reliable caries diagnosis follows a simple principle: When detected early, it can be quickly healed. If caries on the tooth is recognized and treated in a timely manner, significant damage can be prevented. In our dental practice, we favor modern caries monitoring. We can detect a cavity in the tooth before it develops. The earlier caries is treated, the less tooth structure is lost. For early detection, we rely on modern diagnostic methods.

Caries is identified through various approaches.

By visiting our dental practice regularly for check-ups and dental hygiene, the development of caries can be effectively prevented. We take action before the tooth is affected. Mirrors and probes are the traditional instruments for caries diagnosis. With new, modern methods, we can even detect hidden caries lesions.

These include:

  • Highly effective transillumination techniques (cold light probe), for example, to detect dentin caries
  • Laser fluorescence method (Diagnodent pen), for example, to detect occlusal caries

The cavity in the tooth is caused by caries.

Caries is caused by pathogenic bacteria in dental plaque. The bacteria feed on sugar, which is found in various foods. Insufficient oral hygiene gives the bacteria an easy opportunity to thrive. The bacteria attack the hard tooth structure.

Different stages of caries can be distinguished:

  • White spots on the tooth = demineralization, mineral loss from the tooth enamel (initial caries)
  • Surface defect on the tooth enamel = caries bacteria destroy the enamel
  • Dark discoloration on the tooth = caries bacteria have penetrated into the dentin (tooth dentin)
  • Darkly discolored cavities in the teeth = caries bacteria destroy the tooth
  • Deep destruction of the tooth with severe pain = caries has reached the sensitive pulp and is affecting the tooth root (root inflammation)
